The Lao Handicraft Group is a non-profit organization, which aims to unite all sectors of handicraft production. We are a branch of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Group was established April 1, 1998 and has a charter from the Ministry of Commerce.

We serve our members through marketing and promotion both domestically and abroad. We also help to strengthen our membership through training in business management, marketing and promotion.

Our membership uses only local materials in their handicraft production. Our craftsman are skilled and have inherited ancient traditions of handicraft production.

While the Lao Handicraft Group aims to maintain a certain standard and quality of handicraft production, at the same time we are proud to contribute to the improvement of Lao living standards and the economic development of our country, Laos.

Textiles
For many centuries, Lao women have woven their own clothes and created their own designs and patterns. They have a long tradition of producing silk and expressing themselves with beautiful colors and sophisticated patterns. They use 100% silk and cotton grown in Laos as well as all natural dyes. Their fine craftsmanship can be seen on the head coverings, the sinh ( traditional skirt), ceremonial sashes, wedding dresses, and funeral clothes.

Rattan

Rattan is abundant in the forests of Laos and has been used for centuries for making basketry, and furniture. Young rattan shoots are also consumed as food.
These our artisans continue these traditions and have adapted their design and techniques for international tastes.

Gold & Silver

The gold and silversmiths of Laos are world renown for their intricate designs.  Gold and silver articles in addition to being decorative were also a means of investing money. As apart of marriage a woman must have a gold belt and the man must pay for his bride in gold. Lao artisans are skilled at making belts, necklaces, rings, bracelets as well as bowl and cup for ceremonial purposes.

The forest of Laos supply wonderful woods for carving such as teak, rosewood, ebony and other tropical hardwoods. Today's Lao carvers make furniture, office accessories, knick-knacks, toys, kitchen utensils among other items.
